Description
This work is about the painting experience of the moods that get created in life that then gets transformed into my work. Even my Wife had to write about what she experienced during my process, here is what she had to say. I was sitting out in our 'Florida Room' having my first cup of coffee, when Dennis came in with his painting that he had finished in the night while I slept. He had me close my eyes as he put the painting in position. When I opened my eyes, what I saw was the horse he had been working on, but now it was all darkness -- dark reds, almost turning into blackness and it was signed.
It was so different than his usual paintings which are so colorful and bright! I did not like it and I was wondering what I could say that would not hurt his feelings. After a few moments of looking at it, he asked me what I thought. I said "It's dark." I could see a look of disappointment in his eyes, but what could he say? It was dark.
As I sat there looking at it, I was feeling so sad that tears were coming to my eyes. Then he began explaining how he had been feeling inside for the past few days and that, when he couldn't sleep, he thought he would paint those feelings onto the canvas. Well, now I did cry because I felt such a deep sadness in my heart, the visual was so depressing to me and I had not realized he was in such an emotional dark place.
Soon he went in the house to get us another cup of coffee, and I looked even closer at the painting. As I did, I saw a visual in the horse's body that represented hope. I could see the scene of a forest with a creek and on the bank there was a little, old-fashioned church with a very tall cross at the top. Now I felt better looking at it and even to begin liking it.
After we had just about finished our coffee, Dennis said, "I'm going to take it into the studio and add some red highlights here and there." (Remember, it was already signed, so that was kind of a surprise to me.) He headed to the studio & I headed into the kitchen to make breakfast. I was almost done cooking when he came in with the painting -- it was completely different, like it is now as you see it.
So, as an artist, he was able to get those other feelings out into the light of day and come back with a strong visual representing determination & passion.
